In researching the background for these books I wanted to make the events in the fictitious world mirror the course of actual world war two events as closely as possible without being a slavish copy. The reader can, if they wish, relate the timing of events in the book to any of the numerous timelines that have been published for this period on the web.

Many of my characters are associated with the Navy, rather than the other branches of the services. There are two trivial reasons for this; the first is that classically, wizards are bearded. Only the senior service were allowed beards on active service. The second is that I wished to have a presence that would be local to my plotline and where the characters wouldn’t suddenly be called away to foreign shores or be required to spend most of their time in barracks.

As the magical world must stay hidden, the Navy seemed to provide the right sort of continuous clandestine presence for the action. Of course my choice might have been influenced by the fact that Naval Intelligence boasts the world’s most famous agent; Commander James Bond.
