John (Jack) Francis Hawksmere MD D.Thau
was born in 1896 to Robert and Elisabeth Hawksmere (nee Lanchester). He followed in his father's footsteps studying to be a healer at the wizarding Temple until War broke out in 1914. Unlike many wizards who avoided the conflict, Jack volunteered as an ambulance officer and saved many lives rescuing wounded soldiers from the mud of no-man's-land on the battlefields. His war experience taught him that fighting wasn't glorious or noble, it was brutal, senseless and bloody. After the war, when he was 24 he studied medicine, gaining his undergraduate degree from Cambridge in 1923 and moving from there to train in St Bartholomew's Hospital in the City of London. Despite being one of the most powerful wizards of his generation he has never sought political office or power. His talents were, however, recognised by his peers and his natural ability to command resulted in his being chosen to head the British magical response to the German occult forces during World War Two. He was given the rank of Commodore and commanded the Fleet Thaumaturgical Auxiliary during the whole of that conflict.
